I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, like the first time, and that time the LORD again listened to me and agreed not to destroy you.
There were four things in and by which God showed himself reconciled to Israel and made them truly great and happy, and in which God's goodness took occasion from their badness to make him the more illustrious: - I. He gave them his law, gave it to them in writing, as a standing pledge of his favour.
Commenting on Deuteronomy 10:1-11
And I stayed in the mount, according to the first time, forty days and forty nights,.... Which is to be connected with Deu 10:6 and relates what passed before he came down from the mount with the two tables; as that he stayed there as long as he did when he received the first tables, and fasted also as long as he did then; see Exo 34:28.
Moses here resumes his address, and having made a passing allusion to the principal events in their history, concludes by exhorting them to fear the Lord and serve Him faithfully.
