2. The harvest is indeed abundant. I have explained this passage under the ninth chapter of Matthew; Harmony, volume 1 p. 421. but it was proper to insert it again in this place, because it is related for a different purpose.
We have here the sending forth of seventy disciples, two and two, into divers parts of the country, to preach the gospel, and to work miracles in those places which Christ himself designed to visit, to make way for his entertainment. This is not taken notice of by the other evangelists: but the instructions here given them are much the same with those given to the twelve. Observe, I.

Therefore said he unto them,.... That is, the "Lord Jesus", as the Ethiopic version expresses it; he said to the seventy disciples, what he had before said to the twelve apostles in Mat 9:37 where are the same words as here: the harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few, pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest that he would send forth labourers...
