Christ here says many of those things to a Pharisee and his guests, in a private conversation at table, which he afterwards said in a public discourse in the temple (Mt. 23); for what he said in public and private was of a piece.
Commenting on Luke 11:37-54
Verse 53. To urge him vehemently. To press upon him violently. They were enraged against him. They therefore pressed upon him; asked him many questions; sought to entrap him, that they might accuse him. Provoke him, &c. This means that they put many questions to him about various matters, without giving him proper time to answer.
