Behold, the hope of a man is false; he is laid low even at the sight of him.
Whether this leviathan be a whale or a crocodile is a great dispute among the learned, which I will not undertake to determine; some of the particulars agree more easily to the one, others to the other; both are very strong and fierce, and the power of the Creator appears in them.
Commenting on Job 41:1-10
Behold, the hope of him is in vain,.... Of getting the mastery over him, or of taking him; and yet both crocodiles and whales have been taken; nor is the taking of them to be despaired of; but it seems the "orca", or the whale with many teeth, has never been taken and killed (o); shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
the hope--of taking him. cast down--with fear "at the (mere) sight of him."
