Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”
In these verses, we have Christ discoursing with his disciples about the great things that pertained to the kingdom of God; and one circumstance of this discourse is taken notice of here which we had not in the other evangelists - that Christ was alone praying, and his disciples with him, when he entered into this discourse, Luk 9:18. Observe, 1.

They answering said, John the Baptist,.... This was the opinion of some who thought that he was risen from the dead, as in Luk 9:7. but some say Elias; the prophet, and the Tishbite; who according to the Jewish notion, was to be the forerunner of the Messiah, so in Luk 7:8.
